Lives and works in Oslo, Norway. She started her art studies at an early age, and she has an extensive classic artistic background, among others from the National Art Academies in Oslo and Bucharest. She explores the relationship between light, colour, space and time in her paintings, drawings, prints, lighting sculptures, public art commissions and site-specific concepts. Ever since early childhood she drew and painted the dreams she had in strong colors. The clear light of the polar night which appeared to her inner eye as a child, she met again years later when she visited Northern Norway. It was an emotional meeting with a sublime and wild landscape, which she, in a strange way, felt that she knew from before.

Yttredal’s artistic production encompasses a wide range of materials, techniques and formats. She combines traditional techniques in painting and drawing with new technology, depending of the content of the work. One challenge she has given herself has been to preserve the painting as a concept, but expand it by exploring new avenues that combine color pigment and light. The medieval stained glass combines colour and light thanks to the transparency of the glass. Mixing a color with white paint on canvas will brighten up the colour, but curb it simultaneously. Transparency may replace the use of white to keep the color intensity. In search for answers, Yttredal was invited to New York State by the director of the factory which was the first in the world to produce special type of paint and other media that interact with the light, to experiment with new materials that can be used almost as oil painting, but still have other properties. By mixing interferent, iridescent and transparent media in many layers, Yttredal developed a special technique. The colours on the work`s surface interact with the surrounding light and change character. They also change in relation to the viewer’s position.

Cycles in nature and in human life, the changeable, is a theme which Calina Pandele Yttredal explores. Through this technique, the paintings communicate more subtle meanings as they possess stratas inviting the spectator`s gaze beyond the surface. An optical dynamic on the picture’s surface appears over time, expressing the ideea of transformation. An example is the 10 meter long public art commission “Landscape of Finnmark” inaugurated at Kirkenes Snowhotel. Yttredal used iridescent and transparent media on special kind of acrylic glass which was mounted directly on the glass facade. Painting and nature interact. Integrated LED light with changing scenarios programmed by Yttredal with shades related to those in nature, contribute to the impression that the work lives and interacts with the environment, in relation to the time of day, weather, seasons.

Yttredal`s works has been shown in solo and group exhibitions both in Norway and abroad, such as USA, France, Italy, Brasil, Finland, Romania, Japan, and she has participated at national exhibitions, such as State Autumn Exhibition in Oslo. Her works have been acquired by several public institutions, private collectors, and incorporated into Queen Sonja's art collection.

Calina Pandele Yttredal has been commissioned a number of artistic projects and public art works, including lighting design, scenography, portrait paintings. She has featured in several radio- and TV programs, both in Norway and abroad. Yttredal has published books on colour, light, communication, through Gyldendal Publishing House and Fagbokforlaget, used among others as a syllabus in college and university education. She explores how the pigment colour interacts with the color of light and how both affect us, in nature as well as in art. She has taught, held courses and given lectures at national and international conferences, a number of institutions including the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, Oslo and Akershus University College, National Museum, and Lyskultur – the Norwegian Lighting Institute. Calina Pandele Yttredal has received a number of study-, work-, and travel grants, among others from the The Norwegian State, The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from the Fund of Norwegian Non-fiction Writers.

Calina Pandele Yttredal bor og arbeider i Oslo, Norge. Hun har tegnet og malt siden tidlig alder og har en omfattende klassisk kunstnerisk bakgrunn og utdanning, blant annet fra studier ved Kunstakademier i Oslo og Bucuresti. Utforskningen omkring forholdet mellom lys, farge, rom og tid har vært et spesialfelt. Det har hun gjort gjennom malerier, tegninger, grafikk, lysskulpturer, offentlige utsmykninger og stedsspesifikke konsepter, samt gjennom sine bøker. De fargerike drømmene hun hadde i barndommen om eksplosjoner i verdensrommet, stjernetåker eller merkelige landskaper, måtte hun bare få ned på arket, om det så var midt på natten. 4 år gammel tok hennes mor henne til Nasjonalgalleriet i Bucuresti der hun ble stående som trollbundet foran et maleri av Rembrandt. Hun så ikke malingsstrøk på lerretet, bare rent lys. Det magiske lyset hun så i sine barndomsdrømmer, møtte hun igjen år senere da hun besøkte Nord-Norge. Et møte med et sublimt og vilt landskap, som hun på en merkelig måte følte at hun kjente fra før. Lyset har alltid vært en ledetråd gjennom Yttredals kunstnerskap, en måte å se og forstå verden på. Å fornemme det immaterielle, det subtile, som vi oppfatter kontinuerlig uten å legge merke til, men som samtidig påvirker livene våre, har fascinert henne.

Yttredals kunstneriske produksjon omfatter et bredt spekter av materialer, teknikker og formater. Hun kombinerer tradisjonelle teknikker innen maling og tegning med ny teknologi, avhengig av verkets innhold. En utfordring hun har gitt seg selv har vært å bevare maleriet som konsept, men utvide det ved å utforske nye måter å kombinere fargepigment og lys på. Å blande en farge med hvit maling på lerret vil lyse opp fargen, men dempe den samtidig. Gjennomsiktighet kan erstatte bruken av hvitt for å holde fargeintensiteten. Et eksempel er middelalderens glassmalerier. For å studere nærmere denne problemstillingen ble Yttredal invitert til New York State av direktøren for den første fabrikken i verden som produserer spesiell type maling og andre medier som samspiller med lyset. Der eksperimenterte hun med nye materialer som kan brukes nesten som oljemaleri, men som også besitter andre egenskaper. Ved å blande interfererende, iriserende og transparente medier lag på lag, har Yttredal utviklet en egen maleteknikk. Fargene på verkets overflate samspiller med lyset i omgivelsene og endrer karakter. De endrer seg også i forhold til betrakterens posisjon.

Sykluser i naturen og i menneskets liv, det foranderlige, er et tema som Calina Pandele Yttredal utforsker. Gjennom denne teknikken formidler verkene subtile budskap. Yttredal har stilt ut på en rekke separat- og gruppeutstillinger både i Norge og i utlandet, som USA, Frankrike, Italia, Brasil, Finland, Romania, Japan, og hun har deltatt på nasjonale utstillinger, som Statens høstutstilling i Oslo. Hennes verk er kjøpt inn av ulike institusjoner, og innlemmet i H.M. Dronning Sonjas jubileumssamling. Calina Pandele Yttredal har fått i oppdrag en rekke kunstneriske prosjekter og offentlige utsmykninger, inkludert lysdesign, scenografi, portrettmalerier. Hun har spilt i flere radio- og TV-programmer, både i Norge og i utlandet. Yttredal har gitt ut bøker om farge, lys, kommunikasjon, gjennom Gyldendal forlag og Fagbokforlaget, benyttet blant annet som pensum i høyskolesektoren. Hun har undervist, holdt kurs og foredrag på nasjonale og internasjonale konferanser, og en rekke utdanningsinstitusjoner, inkludert Statens Kunstakademi i Oslo, Høgskolen i Oslo og Akershus , Nasjonalmuseet, og Lyskultur - Norsk lysinstitutt.
