Public art for Bjørnson Jubilee
Seilet hotel, Molde
On the occasion of the national celebration of the centenary of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's death in 2010, I was invited to perform an public art commission at Scandic Seilet Hotel in Molde, where a new building was also to be inaugurated. Since Bjørnson lived in Molde in his youth, the city celebrates the Bjørnson Festival every year. The concert hall at Rica Seilet Hotel is named after the famous author. My artistic contribution consists of more than 40 works of paintings and installations, including a series of two meter high iridescent trees on frosted acrylic glass. These are adapted to the building's proportions and to the colours of the walls. Inspired by Bjørnson's short story "Arne" and the famous conversation between trees that "plan to dress the bare mountain", I created a path that consists of paintings of trees that change colour, extending from the main entrance, through a glass corridor, to the new building. Here is an atrium where the trees gather to "a forest" that can be viewed through three floors. The trees represent places that Bjørnsom has visited, they are a mythological symbol such as the tree of life Yggdrasil, but also a symbol in the climate debate. In addition, series of paintings on canvas in various formats are distributed in the reception, corridors, conference rooms and restaurant, as part of the project. Both Romsdalsmuseet and Bjørnson biographs, have been involved in the project, which among others was mentioned in the National Library's news column.
I anledning nasjonalmarkeringen av hundreårsdagen for Bjørnstjerne Bjørnsons død i 2010, ble jeg invitert til å utføre en kunstnerisk utsmykning på Scandic Seilet Hotel i Molde, hvor også nytt bygg skulle innvies. Siden Bjørnson bodde i Molde i ungdomsårene, feirer byen Bjørnson-festivalen hvert år. Konsertsalen på Rica Seilet Hotel er oppkalt etter den berømte forfatteren.Mitt kunstneriske bidrag består av vel 40 verker malerier og installasjoner, blant annet en serie to meter høye iriserende trær på frostet akrylglass. Disse er tilpasset byggets proporsjoner og fargene på veggene. Med inspirasjon fra Bjørnsons novelle “Arne” og den berømte samtalen mellom trær som "planlegger å kle det nakne fjell", skapte jeg en sti som består av en serie 2 m høye malerier av trær som skifter farge, som strekker seg fra hovedinngangen, gjennom en glasskorridor til det nye bygget. Her er det et atrie hvor trærne samles til “en skog” som kan betraktes gjennom tre etasjer. Trærne representerer steder hvor Bjørnsom har besøkt, de er mytologisk symbol som livets treet Yggdrasil, men også symbol i klimadebatten. I tillegg er serier malerier på lerret i ulike formater fordelt i resepsjon, korridorer, konferanserom og restaurant, som del av utstmykningen. Både Romsdalsmuseet og Bjørnson-biografer, har vært involvert i prosjektet, som blant annet ble omtalt i Nasjonalbibliotekets nyhetsspalte.
